Cape Town — South Africa’s law enforcement and political landscape is under intense scrutiny after KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused senior police officials and politicians of colluding with criminal syndicates.

Mkhwanazi, speaking at a press conference on July 6, alleged that the corruption extended to the country’s police minister, Senzo Mchunu, who he claims disbanded a task force investigating political killings in KZN to protect associates.

The claims have reignited frustrations for families like Patricia Blows, whose son Angelo was shot and killed during an apparent robbery in Johannesburg in 2016. Despite providing evidence, the investigation into his death has seen little progress.

Mkhwanazi’s statements have drawn widespread public support, reflecting frustration with South Africa’s crime situation. While national crime statistics indicate a slight drop in violent crime between January and March 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, the country still ranks fifth globally on the crime index and 82nd on the corruption perception index.

Dressed in special operations gear and flanked by armed guards, Mkhwanazi told journalists he was “combat ready” and would not back down from exposing corruption. A social media campaign, “Hands off Mkhwanazi,” has reinforced his support following a previous investigation into his conduct by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

President Cyril Ramaphosa responded with a televised address announcing that Mchunu had been placed on special leave and that a judicial commission of inquiry would be established to investigate the allegations. Critics argue that Ramaphosa’s response is cautious, aimed at preserving political alliances ahead of local elections.

Experts warn that failure to act decisively could damage Ramaphosa’s legacy and South Africa’s international standing. The current crisis coincides with the anniversary of the July 2021 unrest in KZN and Gauteng, highlighting ongoing challenges in crime and governance.

Community members, including Blows, continue to live in fear as violent crime persists in areas like the Cape Flats, where incidents of shootings and gang-related violence are common.

The unfolding situation underscores deep concerns over systemic corruption, crime, and the effectiveness of law enforcement in South Africa.
