The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over most parts of Mpumalanga and the central and northern areas of Gauteng on Monday afternoon.
A 60% chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms is expected over Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela warned of possible localised flooding, damaging winds, and hail in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
“Damaging winds are expected in the interior of KwaZulu-Natal, especially in the southwestern regions, which may affect high-sided vehicles. Along the south coast, winds and waves could disrupt navigation at sea and coastal activities,” he said.
For Tuesday, isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecast mainly over northeastern areas, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, parts of Gauteng, and northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Tshwane emergency services said the weather system, caused by a cut-off low-pressure system, is expected to affect Tshwane from 2pm. Spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba said the department would remain on high alert to respond to emergencies and monitor weather conditions.
Heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas, flat plains, and vulnerable roads. Large hailstones, strong winds, and lightning could result in structural damage and fires. Risks include traffic disruptions, vehicle accidents on slippery roads, power outages, service interruptions, and property damage.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid metal objects, refrain from outdoor activities such as fishing or golf, and never attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, or swollen streams during severe thunderstorms.
