The DHL Stormers claimed the inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) title after a hard-fought 18–13 victory over the Vodacom Bulls in the grand final at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday night.

In a tense and physical encounter, the Stormers outscored their Pretoria rivals by two tries to one, sealing the historic win with a powerful second-half performance. Both teams delivered strong displays, using their forwards and backlines to fight for dominance on a cold, wet evening in the Mother City.

The Bulls drew first blood early in the match when centre Harold Vorster crossed the line in the third minute after a strong break by hooker Johan Grobbelaar. Flyhalf Chris Smith converted to put the visitors 7–0 ahead. The Stormers responded late in the first half with a penalty from Manie Libbok, narrowing the gap to 7–3 at halftime.

After the break, Smith extended the Bulls’ lead with a penalty in the 42nd minute, but the Stormers struck back almost immediately. No. 8 Evan Roos powered over for a try two minutes later, and Libbok’s conversion levelled the score at 10–10.

The Bulls suffered a setback in the 52nd minute when Cornal Hendriks was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Stormers centre Ruhan Nel. Taking advantage of the extra man, the Stormers surged ahead as replacement hooker Andre-Hugo Venter scored from a rolling maul, pushing them to a 15–10 lead.

Smith reduced the deficit with a penalty in the 64th minute, but Libbok’s composed drop goal six minutes from time gave the home side an 18–13 advantage. The Stormers held firm in the dying moments to secure the win and the championship title.

Deon Fourie, playing his 100th match for the Stormers, was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.

Scorers:

Vodacom Bulls (13) – Try: Harold Vorster. Conversion: Chris Smith. Penalties: Smith (2).

The victory marked a memorable night for the Stormers, who became the first-ever champions of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.
