Volkswagen South Africa recorded impressive vehicle sales in 2022, with a total of 63,601 units sold domestically. Of these, 58,447 were passenger cars, giving the German automaker a 16.4% share of the total passenger car market.

According to Steffen Knapp, head of the Volkswagen Passenger Car brand, 5,154 commercial vehicles were sold locally during the same period.

Volkswagen also achieved strong export figures, shipping 98,315 Polos to 38 international countries, representing an increase of 8,942 units compared to 2021.

The Polo Vivo emerged as Volkswagen’s best-selling model in 2022, with 20,866 units sold. The Polo followed with 15,697 units, while the T-Cross ranked third with 10,384 units sold.

“Our T SUV family is growing from strength to strength. In 2022, T-Cross sales increased by 38% compared with 2021,” Knapp stated.

The company also revealed that the new Golf R 8 R is set to launch in 2023, following the success of the Golf GTI, which saw its sales more than double last year to 639 units.

Launched in June 2022, the Volkswagen Taigo recorded 1,885 sales, while the refreshed T-Roc sold 2,407 units. The larger Tiguan range, including the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace and the performance-focused Tiguan R, reached 2,613 units sold, and the Touareg saw a 9% year-on-year sales increase.

Despite facing severe stock and parts shortages, Volkswagen’s overall performance in 2022 remained strong.

The Commercial Vehicles division recorded a 5% year-on-year improvement, with 5,154 units sold. Top sellers in this segment were the Amarok (1,896 units), T6.1 Kombi (830 units), and Caddy Cargo (370 units).

For 2023, Volkswagen South Africa plans to strengthen its market presence with an expanded lineup, including the new Golf 8 R, Tiguan TDI, T-Cross Trendline, Polo Vivo GT upgrade, Polo Sedan TSI, and a facelifted Touareg.
