Durban — South African Revenue Services (SARS) officials, accompanied by police, raided properties owned by businesswoman and Royal AM Football Club owner Shauwn Mkhize in Durban and Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday afternoon.

The operation targeted Mkhize’s La Lucia residence in Durban and the Royal AM clubhouse, Royal Ranch, near Maqongqo in Pietermaritzburg. Locksmiths were on-site to assist with access. SARS said the raids aimed to secure assets and retrieve documents linked to an outstanding tax debt of nearly R40 million.

Investigators sought employee records, including contracts, pay slips, payroll details, and tax returns. Mkhize is alleged to owe R37 915 549 in tax linked to the Shandi Trust, a family entity. Last Thursday, SARS obtained a court-ordered search warrant from the Durban High Court.

Heavily armed police and an armoured vehicle were stationed outside Mkhize’s Durban home. Luxury cars, including a Lamborghini and Rolls Royce owned by Shandi Trust and Royal AM, have already been attached by SARS for possible auction to recover the debt.

In a statement, SARS said the operation was a significant step in combating tax evasion and criminal activity that undermines South Africa’s economy. Commissioner Edward Kieswetter emphasized that Mkhize is not above the law.

“[The] search-and-seizure operation must communicate an unambiguous message that law enforcement agencies will act to stop lawlessness. The most vulnerable in our society depend on taxes to mitigate poverty, unemployment, and hunger,” Kieswetter said.

At Royal Ranch, police blocked journalists from entering the premises. A Royal AM branded van was seen being towed away, and locksmiths entered the property to access vehicles and other assets. The raid concluded in time for Royal AM players to depart for their match against Golden Arrows at Harry Gwala Stadium. Traffic officers escorted the players to the stadium.

SARS stated that the crackdown aligns with its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with tax laws, particularly in the construction and business sectors.

The raid follows reports that the Shandi Trust, linked to Mkhize, failed to meet tax obligations. Authorities will continue investigations into the business records and asset holdings of the entity.
