What a year 2024 has been for South African athletes across all sporting codes — from football and rugby to tennis, mixed martial arts, athletics, and netball — as they shone brightly on the global stage. With only a few weeks left until 2025, Sunday World reflects on some of the most remarkable achievements by South African sports stars this year.
Dricus du Plessis Makes UFC History
Mixed Martial Artist Dricus du Plessis became the first South African to win a UFC title when he defeated American Sean Strickland by split decision in January. The victory crowned him the UFC Middleweight Champion. Du Plessis went on to defend his title successfully against Nigerian fighter Israel Adesanya in August, entering 2025 as the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
Bafana Bafana’s Bronze at AFCON
Defying all odds, Bafana Bafana — led by coach Hugo Broos — delivered an outstanding performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, claiming a bronze medal in February. It marked South Africa’s first podium finish in 24 years. The tournament was filled with quality football, emotions, and excitement, and the national team reignited hope among South African fans.
Broos and his team have since qualified for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco with two matches to spare, raising expectations for another strong showing.
Kgothatso Montjane Wins Wimbledon Title
South African wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso “KG” Montjane achieved her long-awaited dream when she, alongside Japan’s Yui Kamiji, won the Wimbledon wheelchair doubles title in 2024. Although she missed the Paris Paralympics following the passing of her mother, Montjane’s legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest tennis players remains unshaken.
Ronwen Williams Earns Ballon d’Or Nomination
After his stellar performances at AFCON and with Mamelodi Sundowns, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made history as the first Africa-based player nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Yashin Trophy. He also dominated the CAF Awards nominations, with expectations high that he would sweep multiple honors.
Williams’ heroics at AFCON, where he saved four of five penalties against Cape Verde in the quarterfinals, remain one of the standout moments in African football history.
4x100m Relay Team Wins Olympic Silver
South Africa’s men’s 4x100m relay team — featuring Akani Simbine, Bradley Nkoana, Shaun Maswanganyi, and rising star Bayanda Walaza — captured silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their performance ended a long wait for South Africa to claim a track and field medal and gave rise to the popular slogan “No DNA, just RSA.”
Springboks Continue Rugby Dominance
The Springboks cemented their reputation as global rugby powerhouses, winning 11 of 13 Test matches in 2024 under coach Rassie Erasmus. Their only two defeats came narrowly — by a single point each — against Ireland and Argentina. The team closed the year ranked number one in World Rugby’s official standings, underscoring South Africa’s dominance on the world stage.
South Africa’s athletes have once again proven their resilience, talent, and determination — making 2024 a truly unforgettable year in the nation’s sporting history.
