A 31-year-old municipal worker, Xichavo Ntsanwisi, was fatally stabbed by his 22-year-old girlfriend in Midrand, Johannesburg, police confirmed.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said officers responded to a report of a stabbing on Monday and found Ntsanwisi with a fatal stab wound to the upper body. He was declared dead at the scene.
“The preliminary investigation led to the arrest of a woman reported to be the girlfriend of the deceased,” Masondo stated. The suspect is expected to appear in Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
Greater Giyani Mayor Thandi Zitha expressed shock over the incident, describing it as another painful reminder of the prevalence of gender-based violence in South Africa. “We woke up to the devastating news of the passing of our employee Xichavo Ntsanwisi, 31, who allegedly died at the hands of his girlfriend,” she said.
Zitha emphasized the broader implications of the tragedy, saying it highlights the severity of violence in society. She extended condolences to Ntsanwisi’s family, relatives, and friends, assuring them that they are not alone in mourning his loss.
