South African motorists will experience mixed changes at the pumps this October, with petrol prices rising slightly while diesel prices decrease modestly. The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced the official fuel price adjustments, effective from midnight on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
Petrol prices for 93 and 95 octane will increase by 1 cent and 8 cents per litre, respectively. Diesel users will see a decrease of 8 to 10 cents per litre, while illuminating paraffin will drop by 11 cents per litre.
The adjustments are attributed to fluctuating global oil prices, a stronger rand, and increases in forecourt employee wages. Brent crude traded mostly around $67 per barrel throughout September, peaking at $69 in the final week, while the rand averaged R17.30/$, finishing stronger toward the end of the month.
The Department noted that the price environment shifted from an under-recovery at the start of September to an over-recovery by month-end, particularly benefiting diesel consumers.
