The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed Malusi Gigaba’s decision to step aside from his official duties, describing the move as a demonstration of discipline, maturity and adherence to party principles.
Gigaba, a former ANC NEC member and former Minister of Public Enterprises, has been charged with corruption linked to a multi-billion-rand locomotives tender at Transnet. He appeared alongside four co-accused in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
He currently serves as a Member of Parliament and co-chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence.
In its statement, the ANC said Gigaba’s decision aligns with the party’s step-aside resolution adopted at the 55th National Conference. The party stressed that stepping aside does not imply guilt but is a measure to protect public confidence while legal proceedings continue.
The ANC said Gigaba’s voluntary move, made without pressure, reflects his commitment to organisational integrity and the broader interests of the movement.
