Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been handed a 12-match suspension for making contact with the eye of Wales flanker Alex Mann during South Africa’s 73-0 victory in Cardiff last Saturday. The sanction rules him out of action until April.
Etzebeth, the most capped Springbok in history, received a permanent red card in the Autumn Internationals Test after the incident drew widespread criticism, with head coach Rassie Erasmus admitting it “did not look good”.
The clash occurred late in the match during a scuffle between players. Etzebeth appeared to make contact with Mann’s eye but insisted in his statement to the independent disciplinary committee that he had acted in self-defence.
“I did not, at any stage, aim for his eyes or intend to make contact with his eye,” Etzebeth said, according to the judgment.
The disciplinary panel—chaired by Christopher Quinlan KC and including former England internationals Leon Lloyd and Becky Essex—ruled that the act was intentional and warranted a mid-range entry point of 18 matches. This was reduced by six matches due to mitigating factors and Etzebeth’s prior disciplinary record.
New Zealand flanker Ardie Savea submitted a character testimonial for Etzebeth, while Mann did not participate in the hearing.
The ruling means Etzebeth will miss 12 games for the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship and will only return in April. He will not miss any Test matches, as the Springboks do not play again until July.
